Universal Ultra DC Motor Kit & Turntable Power Supply

Power supply upgrade includes high-grade DC100 motor, fully balanced upgrade transformer housed in a large enclosure, regulator and speed control box, strobe card, full instructions, etc.

Design and Characteristics

The Ultra power supply regulator builds on the success of the Advanced power supply and includes the same load compensating design that results in such good speed stability. However, a number of important advances in the Ultra design result in a clearly audible upgrade.

The reasons why superior power supplies have such an audible effect on performance have been well documented - it is well known, for example, that they reduce variations in motor speed and, more importantly, vibration of platter and arm. What may not be so generally appreciated is that speed variation is measured over too long a period to provide more than a guide to wow and flutter, and that platters also suffer a momentary slowing under load which is so small it can hardly be measured. The cartridge amplifies this effect 100,000 times, resulting in an appreciable loss of dynamic impact, especially in the bass region. To overcome this, some decks use a very high mass platter but this "solution" has its own drawbacks, producing a thick, clinical and lifeless sound. A better solution is to make the motor capable of responding powerfully and instantaneously to passages that increase the dynamic load on the deck. This is one aspect addressed by the Ultra power supply.

Another factor often not fully appreciated is that a voltage regulator must not be adversely affected by the background electric and magnetic field and high internal power fluctuations of the motor itself. A good power supply must be able to absorb such dips and surges in load, while adjusting to deliver copious and precise power with great speed.

The Ultra power supply is designed to meet these requirements and the results are obvious upon listening.

Component upgrades

Many aspects of component specification have been upgraded, including low impedance/low leakage capacitors, highly specified diodes, special LED, paralleled transistors carefully matched to within 0.1 V.

DC100 Motor

As of August 2003, all Ultra and Advanced kits employ our new DC100 motor. This is a higher torque, near silent running motor with lower vibration than the one used previously.
