Replacement stylus assemblies are available for many brands of phono cartridges. If a cartridge is many years old the suspension and damping materials will have deteriorated so even if there has not been much use and the diamond is not worn a new stylus assembly is a good idea. Genuine stylus assemblies (from the original manufacturer) are usually about 50 to 75% of the cost of a complete cartridge. Third party replacements (Goldring, Stanfield etc) are usually only about $50.00, but they will not necessarily give the same performance as a genuine one. This is particularly true with the more expensive cartridges. With the cartridges that were fitted as standard on many turntables from the 70s and 80s only a third party stylus assembly will be available. As such cartridges were usually quite basic models it is often better to replace the whole cartridge. Contact us for suggestions for your turntable.
Older turntables from the 60s often had ceramic cartridges rather than magnetic ones and although replacement styli (needles) are available they are not recommended as they track the records at excessive forces causing rapid wear to the vinyl.
